Canoe & Kayak Summer Adventure Camps!

Need a cool camp for your 8 to 15 year old kids this summer?  Pittsboro Parks is partnering with Haw River Canoe and Kayak Company to offer a fun adventure camp that should be a blast.  The course is geared toward developing skills in canoes and kayaks, but that's just the beginning.  There will also opportunities to practice outdoor living skills like orienteering, fire-building and shelter-building.   Kids can get to know the flora and fauna of the Haw, explore islands, and develop confidence through games and exercises at a low ropes course.

Week-long half and full day camps are available for $195 or $250 per week respectively. Camps are appropriate for paddlers of all skill levels, including those who have never canoed or kayaked.  The camps are based out of nearby Saxapahaw and a different section of the Haw is explored each day.  Camps are available the weeks of July 2-6, July 9-13, and July 16-20.

Check out the Camp Brochure for more info.

Golf Tournament for a Great Cause

While I would never advocate taking the afternoon off to hit the golf course, ahem, if you have that luxury you should consider the event going on at the Siler City County Club this afternoon.  (Registration at noon - shotgun start at 1PM)

Short notice, I know, but let me point out:

  1. we're having a real spring this year and its gorgeous outside,
  2. the golf course is beaconing,
  3. you'd be helping a great cause,
  4. shouldn't you really get more exercise?
  5. recreation breaks actually increase productivity
  6. it is Friday

Folks with the Virginia Cross School are fundraising to purchase playground equipment for kids with special needs.  Why this is critical for optimal human development would make a good post for another time.

Entry fee is $65/ person or $260/ team which includes green fee, cart fee, prizes, beverages and buffet dinner for each player.  The tournament is of a four person captain's choice format.

Disclaimer: Pittsboro Parks is not responsible for the mass exodus to the golf course.  Individuals have free will and take courses of action that they believe to be rational and in their best interest.  :)

Town Lake Park Water Levels

Wild Azalea at Town Lake Park
If you've been out to Town Lake Park lately you've probably noticed the fluctuations in water levels.  If so, don't be alarmed.  The Wetland Restoration Project is still underway and although most of the terraforming has been completed, there are a few remaining operations which will occur within the next few months.  Maintenance to the overflow spillway is slated as is the installation of more wetland and terrestrial plants.  The water level has been lowered somewhat to accommodate this work.

Other improvements to the park, not associated with the restoration project, are ongoing or have recently occurred.  Invasive species clearing along the lower lake has opened many vistas and the entry gate will soon receive a facelift.  There are plans to stock Redeye Sunfish, Bluegill and Large Mouth Bass in the upper lake this autumn.  Please bear with us as these projects are underway.  New information about pending planting and construction activities has been added to the park kiosk in order to help keep visitors informed.  A new park map was also added.

Paddle Access Points added to the PBO Parks Map

Nearby paddle access points on the Haw River have been added to the "Maps & Directions Tab" of the Pittsboro Parks Blog.  (The tab is located just under the blog banner beside the home tab.)

There's also a nifty Google Gadget which can give you directions to Pittsboro's Parks from your location.  For a more comprehensive map of access points along the Haw check out this map by Haw River Trails, or get detailed rapids beta via this detailed Haw River guide by Triangle Outdoors.

Happy paddling!
